The Shawshank Redemption is a thought-provoking movie that leaves its audience pondering what life would be like after being released from prison. The film was produced in 1994, based on the novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King, a renowned author known for his novels turned into major motion pictures, such as It, The Shining, and The Green Mile. Directed and written by Frank Darabont, the movie tells the story of Andy Dufresne (played by Tim Robbins) and Ellis E. Redding (played by Morgan Freeman), also known as Red.
As the story goes, Andy is sent to the Shawshank State Prison in Maine after being convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Andy navigates through his time in prison by befriending Red, a well-known smuggler, albeit at the cost of accruing enemies, referred to as “The Sisters”, who cause physical and sexual harm to Andy, with no intervention from the prison guards. Andy’s background in banking makes him useful to the prison guards, who assign him to work in the prison library, where he soon begins to influence the lives of his fellow inmates positively.
Initially, Andy starts by requesting money and books from the state to help build a better library for the prisoners. Together with Brooks, an elderly inmate who has spent his life in prison, they work tirelessly to achieve this goal. However, before they can complete the library, Brooks is released into a world he knows nothing about. Andy's work in the prison library continues, and with time, he starts doing the banking for the prison, laundering money and putting it all in the account of a fictitious person. The Warden, who assumes he has access to the money, allows Andy to continue with his schemes.
As time passes, Andy becomes a mysterious figure, especially after the death of a friend, Tommy Williams, who has information that could help him. Red worries about Andy until one stormy night when Andy disappears from his cell. The movie masterfully reveals its story through cinematography, focusing on simple but powerful shots that make the audience feel like part of the story. The dialogue acts as the central focus, with the camera following it without any anticipative shots.
The cast also deserves recognition, with Morgan Freeman’s role as Red being a casting masterpiece. The actor brings forth a poignant performance that stays with the audience long after the movie is ended. Tim Robbins also deserves credit for inhabiting Andy's character powerfully, a mix of a quiet, privileged white man and a daring conman. In conclusion, The Shawshank Redemption is a timeless movie that communicates an enduring message to humanity on the possibility of redemption.
The movie's soundtrack, in combination with its background music, proves to be another victory. With songs like "If I Didn't Care" by the Ink Spots and "Lovesick Blues" by Hank Williams, the movie takes you back to the era in which it was set. These songs resonate with younger generations as well, creating a timeless effect for audiences over time.
Watching this movie will leave you with a renewed sense of hope. The experiences of the characters in this film prove that despite what one goes through, they can still come out happy on the other side. Even individuals incarcerated in institutions as terrible as Shawshank have the capability to thrive. As Andy Dufresne stated, "Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope will set you free." Anyone struggling to understand this message, and its relevance to their own life, should make it a priority to watch this movie.
