The article I came across delved into the ubiquitous role of chemistry in our daily lives, both within and outside ourselves. Chemistry appears everywhere, from the meals we cook to the convoluted mechanisms in our brains. Despite our preconceived notions about the field, learning the basics of chemistry can unlock an insightful understanding of our existence and surroundings. What's more, teaching chemistry in an engaging manner can make the subject fun, engendering deeper connections with the material to bolster comprehension.
A prime example of chemistry's widespread applicability is found in my biology class at Stephens, where we explore the evolution of biodiversity. Chemical changes and responses must occur for organisms to adapt and evolve; thus, chemistry plays an instrumental role in ensuring the survival of species. Our study of evolution, therefore, provides further insight into the direct correlation between chemical reactions within the body and the ability to thrive in different environments and conditions.
Moreover, a recent news article revealed that the Greenland ice sheets will rise an alarming foot due to greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere. The impact of pollution and chemicals on the climate is a direct manifestation of the role chemistry plays on Earth. By affecting temperature changes and ice melting, the gaseous emissions from industries issue a reactionary response from the ice sheets in places like Greenland.
So, it becomes easy to question how chemistry can be used outside the lab and medical fields. Surely, as prevalent as it is, there must be applications for chemistry in less conventional jobs. Similarly, chemistry plays a vital role in our bodies by ensuring our overall health. Understanding the significance of chemistry in such spheres make it intellectually invigorating and inspiriting to examine.
