I had the pleasure of reviewing the Broadway HD performance of "She Loves Me," which took place in 2016, starring Tony award-winning actors Laura Benanti, Gavin Creel, Jane Krakowski, and Tony nominee Zachary Levi. My decision to review this production was based on the genre of romantic comedy, as I wanted to watch a musical that would feature humor. I was quite skeptical when I started watching the production because I had never seen many theater productions before. However, the first five minutes had already captured my interest by the storyline, set design, orchestra, and impeccable acting.
"She Loves Me," a romantic comedy, revolves around Amalia and Georg, co-workers at Maraczek’s Parfumerie, who keep having arguments and bickering with each other from the day they met. The plot thickens as they fall for their secret pen friend, who turns out to be each other.
The production is presented in an intimate style, which reflects on stage design, music, costumes, props, and lighting. The simple but elegant design portrays the perfumery as the primary setting, with the city of Budapest outside the store walls. The set design was a good reflection of the 1930s European city and was impressive, with a spiral staircase leading up to the second floor, opening up to three main walls and closing to show a single building. The various sized perfume bottles and lotions on the shelves made excellent props, and the actors' costumes reflected the simple yet modest style of the 1930s. The choreography included a lot of singing and dancing throughout, coupled with various upbeat songs that created a cheery atmosphere.
The actors' ability to portray their specific roles was remarkable, and their performance seemed effortless and natural, which made it very believable. The performance included characters such as Steven Kodaly, Ilona Ritter, Ladislav Sipos, Amalia Balash, Georg Nowack, Mr. Maraczek, and Arpad Laszlo. David Horn, the director, did an outstanding job in orchestrating the entire production and bringing all aspects of the play together, including lighting and orchestra.
Overall, the play was a success, and I would highly recommend it to my friend, Jacob, who has worked in theater before and has an appreciation for the theatrical elements that make productions successful. The only criticism I had was the genre of songs chosen, which intimidated my personal preferences.
To conclude, my experience watching "She Loves Me" was beyond my expectation, and I was genuinely impressed with the production and the work put into it.
One of the key elements that captured my attention throughout the entire production was the exceptional set design, which truly brought the play to life for me due to its stunning realism of a bustling city and store.
Overall, I was pleasantly taken aback by how much I enjoyed the musical, and I attribute this to the superb acting, stunning set design, dynamic choreography, and perfectly timed moments of comedy. Selecting this particular play for my theatre critique was a fantastic decision, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to witness such an outstanding performance.
