Microcontrollers and microprocessors are two different approaches for organizing and optimizing a computing system based on a CPU. Microcontrollers have the CPU and connected units on a single chip, whereas microprocessors have a more powerful CPU on a single chip that connects to external units. Microcontrollers are ideal for embedded systems designed for specific low-power applications, while microprocessors are more suited for general computing applications that require complex and versatile computing operations.

2. What is Amdahl's Law, and what is its purpose?

Amdahl's Law deals with the potential speedup of a program when using multiple processors compared to a single processor. The purpose of this law is to determine the ideal number of processors that can be utilized to maximize efficiency while minimizing overhead.

3. Why is cache size important, and what are the trade-offs?

Cache size is crucial to any application as it affects performance. If the cache size is too small, there will be excessive disk I/O, leading to lower performance. Meanwhile, a cache that is too large than what is required leads to memory wastage. Cache coherence is another issue that arises with synchronization, as the data stored in caches could diverge from one another over time.

4. Define the following terms:

a. Victim Cache: A victim cache is a small, fully-associative cache placed in the refill path of a CPU cache that stores all the blocks evicted from that level of cache.

b. Principle of Locality: The Principle of Locality is the tendency of a processor to access the same set of memory locations repetitively over a short period.

c. Spatial Locality: Spatial Locality means that nearby stored instructions have a high chance of execution.

d. Temporal Locality: Temporal Locality refers to the reuse of data and resources within a small amount of time.

e. Unified Cache: A Unified Cache handles both code (instructions) and data.

f. Split Cache: A split cache consists of two physically separate parts, one for holding instructions and the other for holding data.

g. Access Time: Access Time is the time delay or latency between a request to an electronic system and the completion of that request or return of the requested data.

h. Memory Cycle Time: Memory Cycle Time equals Access Time plus Transient Time.

i. Transfer Rate: Transfer Rate is a metric that measures the speed at which data or information travels from one location to another.

5. What are the cache mapping techniques, and what is Direct Mapping?

The process of cache mapping can be done using three techniques: K-way Set Associative Mapping, Direct Mapping, and Fully Associative Mapping. Direct Mapping assigns every memory block to a particular line in the cache, i.e., every block in the main memory maps to a single cache line. The cache line number with Direct Mapping is determined by the modulo calculation of the block address of the main memory by the total number of lines present in the cache.

6. At which stage are replacement algorithms implemented, and why?

An appropriate page replacement algorithm is necessary when the total memory requirement exceeds physical memory. Replacement algorithms are a fundamental part of virtual memory management, and it helps the OS decide which page in memory needs to be swapped to make room for the presently needed page.

7. How do interrupts increase the efficiency of the processor?

Interrupts are signals sent to a processor by hardware devices to request attention. When an interrupt occurs, the processor suspends the currently executing program and services the interrupt. Interrupts increase the efficiency of the processor by allowing the CPU to perform other tasks while waiting for input or output operations to complete, thus preventing any wasted clock cycles.

When a device requires immediate attention, it requests CPU time. The following terms describe different aspects of a computer's processing capabilities: CPI, MIPS, Efficiency, and Clock Speed.

CPI is an abbreviation for "clock cycles per instruction," which refers to the average number of clock cycles executed per instruction in a program. MIPS is "million instructions per second," and is a measure of a computer's raw processing power. Clock speed refers to how many cycles per second a CPU can execute, expressed in gigahertz (GHz). Efficiency refers to how much work the CPU can accomplish with the amount of energy it uses.

Several factors can impact machine performance, such as the system's configuration, workload, amount of memory, processor speed, and the number of virtual machines running concurrently. For example, the speed and number of paging devices, auxiliary storage capacity, real storage or memory size, and characteristics of the workload each affect performance in a z/VM environment.

Write-back and write-through are two techniques for updating main memory and cache memory. With write-through, every memory write operation updates the main memory and cache memory at the same time. Write-back, on the other hand, only updates the cache, and the main memory and cache memory may have different data.

Pipeline performance can be impacted by un-even stage delay and dependency. The stages should be completed within an equal duration, and dependency between instructions must be avoided. Three types of dependency are possible: structural, control, and data. Structural dependencies arise due to resource conflicts, control dependencies occur during the transfer of control instructions, and data dependencies occur when an instruction depends on the results of a previous instruction.

The five stages of the pipeline process are fetch, decode, execute, memory, and write. During each stage, different operations are performed, such as fetching instructions from memory, decoding them, executing the instructions, accessing data in memory, and storing results in the destination location. A pipeline stall refers to a delay in executing an instruction to resolve a hazard. Stalls are used to eliminate pipeline hazards.

RISC and CISC architectures employ different designs. RISC, or reduced instruction set, uses simple and short instructions to perform tasks, resulting in greater speed and efficiency. By contrast, CISC, or complex instruction set, uses longer and more complicated instructions that can perform multiple operations at once.
