Medical marijuana has been in use since the nineteenth century, particularly in the Western world. Medical marijuana is presently utilized for a wide range of medical purposes, including nausea and vomiting relief, stimulation of appetite in chemotherapy and AIDS patients, and reduction of intraocular eye pressure (which is effective in treating glaucoma as well as gastrointestinal illness). Additionally, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws suggests that cannabis may have "fewer negative side effects than opioids, which can be highly addictive, and NSAIDS, which can cause stomach ulcers, bleeding, and kidney failure."

The legalization of marijuana will free up funds that can be used for healthcare and substance abuse support for people with severe drug addictions. This means that authorities fighting severe drugs like heroin, cocaine, and, most importantly, meth will receive additional funding to remove these drugs from the market and provide treatment to those who are addicted. These revenues can be used to build rehabilitation centers, among other things.

The taxation of marijuana growers and users is a beneficial outcome. In Colorado and Washington, manufacturers and distributors are required to be licensed by the state. Licensing would benefit the states' economies by generating fees.

The legalization of marijuana could aid in the reduction of debt for the United States. Finally, the third reason why marijuana legalization is a good idea is that individuals will smoke it regardless of whether it is legal or not. Because marijuana is illegal, users are forced to purchase it from drug traffickers. These drug merchants either import marijuana or grow it clandestinely.

Nobody knows what substances are present in the marijuana they purchase, and the Center for Substance Abuse Research states that consumers have purchased marijuana contaminated with toxins. If marijuana is legalized, marijuana growers will be required to follow the law, and they will only be allowed to cultivate marijuana plants. Users who buy marijuana from a licensed manufacturer will not have to worry about it being tainted with harmful substances. Therefore, legalization will make marijuana significantly safer.

It is pointless to keep marijuana illegal because it is reminiscent of alcohol prohibition. People continued to consume alcohol, but instead of the money going to the government, it went to criminals like Al Capone. As other states consider whether marijuana legalization is a good idea or not, they should remember that legalization might assist in reducing debt, taking money out of the hands of criminals, and making communities safer.
